Financial Elder Abuse is any act that causes financial harm to an elderly or vulnerable person and it often occurs within a relationship of trust.  It frequently occurs when people who are in a trusting relationship take advantage of a person for their finances. Financial Abuse affects not only the elderly but also other vulnerable members of our community.

Elder abuse can be difficult to spot due to the context in which it happens.  It can occur anywhere, but it most frequently takes place in the elderly’s home or aged care facilities.

It is rarely perpetrated by strangers but is more likely to be family members, friends, carers, neighbours or other trusted persons that take advantage.

Financial abuse has been defined as “the illegal or improper use of an elderly person’s property or finances”.  Abusers adopt methods that vary from taking advantage of their trusted relationship with the older person, to misusing positions such as being a Power of Attorney, to outright deceive or coerce the person.

For example, an adult child may force their parent to make changes to their Will, prematurely take control of the finances, steal their identity, incur expenses in their name or sell or transfer their property without their consent.
